This is the key to your twirling paper monsters! If the circles don’t line up once combined, simply cut the slit a little longer until they do. Join the two circles by sliding the two slits together. Cut a slit in each circle that extends just a little past the center. You will need 4 of these for each monster.įirst, cut two large circles from the same color cardstock. If you don’t want to print the pattern sheet multiple times, you can cut this mouth from the pattern sheet and photocopy it. Squared mouth – Simple, print and cut out.You will need 4 of these for each monster. I provided a blank one in case kids want a different color, they can fill it in themselves. Fang mouth – I’ve included two types of these, one is already colored in red.Another alternative is to cut 4 circles from white paper and color them in with black marker. I suggest using the pattern to cut these from black cardstock. Small circle – This is for the black part of the eye and you will need 4 of these.Medium circle – this is for the white of the monster’s eye.Large circle – monster head, you need 2 of these circles in the same color for one monster. So let’s get down to making them, shall we?įirst, you’ll want to print the patterns. Kids can use whatever color cardstock they want and can mix and match the mouths too. Honestly, it’s a total coincidence that the monster I chose for the stitched mouth just happened to be green like Frankie! The stitched mouth is reminiscent of the Frankenstein monster. The squared off toothy mouth is a favorite of mine that you’ll see in many of my monster crafts on this blog.Īnd of course, there’s the stitched mouth, another one you can use the black marker for. You can use a marker to draw on mouths instead of using the patterns too! One has a red background, the other I left blank in case kids want to color the inside of the mouth a different color. I’ve drawn patterns for you, you can print them in the supply list below. If not, a strategically placed desk fan does the job! If you have a ceiling fan, that should create enough breeze to keep your hanging monsters going. Watch the video above to see the monsters in action! I used a small fan to keep them going. Cardstock is sturdier, doesn’t tear easily as construction paper does, and the colors are much more vibrant! You could use construction paper for these, but I prefer cardstock. Each child can make one, you can hang them during your party and then let them take their paper monster home when they leave. Whether it’s for Halloween or a monster themed birthday party, these twirling paper monsters are super cute and sure to be a big hit with the kids! This can even be a fun make and take party craft for kids.

C’mon Hue make that HDMI 2.1 Sync Box happen to pair with the best gaming TVs.Sync your smart lights to the content on your TV screen with the Philips Hue Play HDMI Sync Box.įour HDMI ports allow you to connect your media devices to your Hue setup, resulting in a fast, seamless display of colourful smart light that responds to and reflects the content you watch or listen to. Throw in an extra $299/£185 for the 75-inch Hue Play Gradient Lightstrip I pair with my 77-inch C2 OLED, and all this creative color has hit my tattered bank balance hard.īut for this ambient light-loving addict, the prospect of playing games at 4K 120fps while simultaneously syncing the colors of glorious virtual worlds through Hue Play gear would be worth the assault to my wallet. Not that this is likely to be a cheap solution – the HDMI 2.0 Sync Box already costs $250/£230. If Philips Hue was to release an HDMI 2.1 version of the Sync Box that supported 4K 120Hz passthrough with Variable Refresh Rate, all my future-proofed gaming prayers would be answered. Still, having to regularly switch HDMI cables when choosing between games that support 4K 120Hz and those that are limited to 60Hz (that I want to sync the colors of) is annoying. Is this a First World Sophie’s Choice moment deserving of the tiniest violin yet conceived by theoretical physics? Of course. Here's the Hue Play box that hides beneath your TV. Sure, all those extra frames makes garotting an ogre smoother than ever, but it also meant I could no longer mimic the icy blues of Kratos’ frigid Midgard via my Sync Box and lightstrip. To hit this buttery performance, though, I had to bypass the HDMI 2.0 limitations of the Sync Box, instead using a different, hideously long HDMI 2.1 cable that I plugged into a different output on the back of my LG C2 OLED. With High Frame Rate enabled, Ragnarok regularly runs between 90-120fps. I recently completed last year’s excellent God of War: Ragnarok on PS5, and because I chose to plump for the High Frame Rate mode, I was forced into an annoyingly fiddly cycle of regularly switching out HDMI cables. While the lack of 120Hz passthrough at 4K isn’t a game-breaker for the Hue Play Sync Box, it does lead to compromises. This means it’s restricted to 4K/60Hz signals, or 120Hz at 1440p. With more and more PS5 and Xbox Series X games supporting frame rates of 120 at 4K, the slightly ageing Sync Box’s flaw is revealed: it doesn’t support HDMI 2.1. There’s a catch when it comes to next-gen consoles, though. Whether having my corneas singed by searing reds in frantic games of Rollerdrome or feeling the warmth of The Witcher 3’s perpetual autumnal tones expanded beyond the dimensions of my LG C2, it’s a terrific effect that makes both games and movies feel more three-dimensional. And it’s with games that you really see the best of the Sync Box and lightstrip. I tend to go for the lowest ‘Subtle’ preset when watching movies, then ramp it up to High when playing games. Thanks to the Hue Sync app, you can tweak the intensity of the color-syncing tech. A good example of the effect in action? Watch The Matrix, and a constant array of glassy greens will illuminate the wall behind your TV to match the Wachowski’s masterful, bullet-dodging color palette. Whether you’re playing the best PS5 games or watching one of the best Netflix movies, the Hue Play Sync Box and Hue Gradient Lightstrip heighten immersion at every turn. An Ambilight or Hue Play system is great for adding atmosphere beyond the bounds of your TV. This applies to both offline and online modes. Make sure to customize them based on the tournament’s standards. Also, keep in mind that not every vehicle in your garage is suitable for all tracks. This mode shows the ideal direction you should follow on the road and has color signs to let you know what your next move is. If you are still a beginner, you can always activate road tracker mode. The game will hold your hand in its tutorials. In addition to the beautiful cars and great handling, the game also features a dynamic weather system, making each track very unpredictable-especially during tournaments. Oh, and also remember that your calibration may also determine your winning chance over a course especially if there are various weather conditions. You can calibrate the settings of your car to whatever preference you want. If you also want to get into the finer details, you may check out your ride before you enter a tournament. These include the pressure of your finger on the accelerate button and the timing of your clutches.Īfter all, that is what REAL racing is all about. While the controls may be much easier than the likes of Dirt and Gran Turismo, it still has plenty of small details within the controls. Once you have the vehicles you like, you can invest in them and provide upgrades so they become viable for specific tournaments. Each car handles much differently from the rest, giving you plenty of reasons to unlock more vehicles. The game features plenty of real-life motorsport leagues including the Indy 500, TOCA, World Rally Championship, and Formula 1. What About Playing PC Games on Steam Deck?Īh, yes, we couldn't forget Steam Deck, Valve's handheld gaming PC! The games mentioned here are designed for Windows-based computers, so you should check out Valve's game compatibility list if you want to play them on Steam Deck. For now, 3.5 stars is the happy medium, but, as we review more games, we may have to be choosier, to keep the list at a manageable size. We didn't want to set the star rating so low that nearly all PC games qualified for the guide, yet we didn't want to set the star rating so high that we exclude quality B-tier games, such as Dead Island and Split/Second. The third criteria required a bit of pondering. Yes, this guide goes tell you a bit about each highlighted game, but the ability to link to a full review benefits people looking for a deeper cut. The first requirement is to ensure that we can give you more insight into a game. To be included, a game must have been reviewed by PCMag, still be available for purchase, and received a rating of 3.5 stars or greater. Here's what we came up with, after much deliberation. PCMag's in-house and freelance reviewers have played a ridiculous number of PC games over the years, so creating criteria for inclusion was essential. In our newest update, we've added one game: the Dead Space remake.Ĭompiling this guide was no small undertaking. It booted just like last time, but instead of asking any questions, it went right to installing itself. (if you have a weak stomach, you may want to stop reading) i should have read the kick start file more closely. It did with no problem, however it wouldn't let me install to another USB drive i connected to the server, gave a fatal error about not finding the CD-ROM image, so i shut it down, reenabled the kick start file and tried again. Gave that last USB guide a try, i setup the image on a spare Linux server (CentOS base), copied over the files and disabled the ks.cfg file since i just wanted to see if it would boot. In case you're wondering, i'm using VMWare converter to move the 2008 install into a VM on a spare linux server, then once ESXi is setup, move it back again via the same process. I do however have 6 new hard drives for it for when i convert it to ESXi and run the 2008 install as a VM., i want to install ESXi on a thumb drive and use the RAID as VM storage. The server is not a new server, its been running 2008 R2 and its a production server, so I don't have the luxury to take it offline for a huge amount of time. I have selected F11 at boot to go into the BIOS boot manager where i can then select the internal optical drive, but it thinks about it for a second and then looks for an OS on the RAID array or move on to the NIC I'm pretty sure i've got the boot order set to 1. The algorithms work by looking at the areas of the image around the highlighted section and selectively (and sensitively) cloning/copying over sections. Tapping and holding this shows the original photo, so you can flip between the two, to see how your editing session is faring. In addition to the top-of-screen functions, the only other UI element is the before/after toggle, top right. The animated effect is quite beautiful and the results, for this easy case, are perfect, as you can see - you'd never know a frisbee had been in the original shot: In this case, I used the paint tool to apply a 'splodge' over the frisbee, then tapped 'GO' and watched the item fade immediately. The other controls are for erasing part of a highlight (perhaps because your finger strayed too far) and for simply panning the photo around at the current zoom level without unintentionally highlighting more content! Very neatly, you can use multi-touch gestures to zoom in and out, so that you get the best possible view of what you're doing, right down to pixel level if needed. Either way, the highlighting is shown in a dark red. The first is as simple as drawing an oval around an object, the second is just using a virtual brush (there's a thickness control that pops up) to paint over the offending item. There are two ways of marking objects or areas for attention by the retouching algorithms: lassoing and painting. The editing interface is also quite simple - don't be put off by the row of controls. The UI is simple, you just pick a photo from your phone's Photos gallery (the tutorial links are just to YouTube videos, I'll mention them later): Starting by using a previously unused test photo from another feature, showing a frisbee against an evening sky. Using three different test images, of gradually increasing difficulty, I put TouchRetouch for Windows Phone to the test. Under ideal conditions, this can be done almost perfectly - think a black spot against an area of sky. The idea behind TouchRetouch is that you pick blemishes or small objects in a photo and the software uses algorithms to clone parts of the surrounding imagery in order to fill in the blemish or space taken by the object. And, overall, deserves a high score here on its latest implementation, on Windows Phone. When it doesn't, it's still pretty useful. Turn your Mac into an “unwanted content removal” studio by downloading TouchRetouch now.TouchRetouch is, as the name sounds, a photo retouching application, but don't dismiss it too lightly, as this has previously existed on all other mobile and desktop platforms, meaning that the intelligence behind the retouching is really rather extraordinary. Make color adjustments to your photo to ensure that your final edited piece looks the way it should. In case there is a distracting element in the background of a picture, you can easily cut off the spoiled part of the photo with the Crop tool. Just copy pixels from one area within your photo and paint with them over another area.ĮXTRA TOOLS: COLOR CORRECTING AND CROPPING Use Clone Stamp to remove objects that are in a complex background or close to the edge of other objects. TouchRetouch allows clearing your photos from undesired objects in an instant. In the tradition of the best horror, Lights Out leaves all of this on the edges of the story, the better for you to fill in some of the blanks on your own. There’s so much in this film that feels informed by a life haunted by depression, from the way family matriarch Sophie ( Maria Bello) sometimes just locks herself in her bedroom because she’s not sure she can spend time around her kids to the way that her daughter, Becca ( Teresa Palmer), runs her fingers along scars on her arms that are from Diana’s long nails but might as well be from self-harm. In particular, Diana has haunted the same family for two generations, and this serves as a sneaky way for the film’s screenwriter, Eric Heisserer, to explore the ways parents fear their own mental illnesses might be passed along to their children. Not since The Babadook have I seen a movie that used its monster as a metaphor for mental illness as effectively as this one does. Good: The use of the monster as a metaphor is better thought-out than in many films Becca (Teresa Palmer) has been putting up with Diana for her entire life. Named Diana, she cuts a creepy figure in silhouette, and she’s got long, long fingernails she can use to attack. Lights Out is obviously filmed on a smaller budget - it seems to take place in about two different locations, with just five or six characters - but the fact that it can turn literally any place into a house of horrors simply by flipping a light switch gives it a great boost when it comes to staging terrifying sequences.Īnd make no mistake: This is one scary monster. In particular, the film uses everything from candles to cellphone screens to increase the tension in moments when the monster has, say, cut power to a city block and the characters need to cross vast swaths of darkness with only their wits to protect them. There have been other creatures like this in movie history (perhaps most famously in Pitch Black, the film that spawned Vin Diesel’s Riddick character), but what makes Lights Out so much fun is that it takes place in our world, where light sources can pop up just about anywhere. Considering that films themselves are just contrasts of light and darkness, the concept gives director David F. Let’s just start with the fact that a monster that can’t attack when someone is standing in a pool of light is a great idea for a movie monster. Good: The monster is terrific on a bunch of levels See if you can spot the monster in this image. I’ll warn you before I do so, however.īut before that, let’s talk about the good, the bad, and the divisive of Lights Out. So to talk about why I enjoyed Lights Out so much, I’m going to have to spoil some things. But it’s the kind of movie where I realized about 10 minutes in how wrapped up I was in the lives of the characters, and realized with about 10 minutes left that I was holding my breath that the director and screenwriter wouldn’t screw everything up.Īnd while I loved the ending, it’s proven incredibly divisive for what it might seem to say about depression. Yes, it has problems - one big one in particular. And the movie’s central metaphor - the monster is depression! - is surprisingly durable, allowing for some great character moments. There are sequences in this film that left the audience at my screening joyfully applauding their creativity and audacity. |
